Several Glasgow museums offer free general entry, including GoMA, Riverside, Kelvingrove and the Hunterian Museum. Their collections cover different subjects, so start with what you want to see.
Plan the journeys between venues and allow for food and transport costs. You may prefer to spend a day at one museum.
For contemporary art: GoMA
The Gallery of Modern Art, usually called GoMA, is in Royal Exchange Square in the city centre. Glasgow Life lists free admission and describes a collection spanning media including painting, sculpture, video and installation.
Read the exhibition information to find out which artists and works are currently on display.
The permanent collection and current exhibitions may differ. Check the listings if you are travelling to see a particular work.
For transport and the city at work: Riverside
Riverside Museum holds Glasgow's transport and technology collections beside the rivers Kelvin and Clyde. General admission is free at the time of checking. Its displays include a recreated street and objects connected with the city's industrial history.
The displays offer ways to explore how people travelled and worked in Glasgow. Choose a subject that interests you and follow it through the collection.
Check the venue's current transport and parking information when planning the journey from the city centre.
For a mix of interests: Kelvingrove
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum combines art and other collections in the west end. General entry is free.
Use the gallery information to choose a few sections. If your group splits up, agree a meeting point.
Our first Glasgow visit guide puts Kelvingrove within a broader plan. You can also follow a design interest with our Mackintosh guide, bearing in mind that separate venues may charge admission.
For science and archaeology: the Hunterian Museum
The University of Glasgow's Hunterian Museum offers free entry. Its collections include material on the Antonine Wall, natural history, medicine and scientific instruments.
The official page also describes work examining the collection's relationship with colonialism and empire, including how objects came into the museum.
Do not confuse free entry to the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery with admission to the Mackintosh House. The venue directory sets out the distinction.
Keep the day affordable in practice
Check opening days and any temporary closure notices before choosing your route. Review access information for the particular buildings you intend to visit. General admission, a special exhibition, a guided tour and an event can have different booking arrangements.
Budget for transport and food even when admission is free. Follow the venue's guidance if you would like to make a donation.
Official museum sources checked on 28 September 2026. Free general admission does not guarantee that every exhibition, event or tour is free.
